On Dec. 6, the video game Fortnite developed by Epic Games, brought back their season one game mode. As many have missed and treasured chapter 1, season 1, Fortnite has decided to keep this season in the game by permanently having a mode named Fortnite OG which will have its own battle pass.

When Fortnite became a trend back in 2017, it was all the rage. This isn’t the first time they’ve brought back the OG(original) season as they also launched this mode back in November 2023 which brought attention to many players.

Thomas Anderson, a senior at East, has been an avid Fortnite player since the beginning and is looking forward to the season return.

“When I was younger, I used to play a lot back in 2017 with my guys. It’s going to be a good time reminiscing, talking to old friends and having fun,” Anderson said.

This game has hit home for many players as it was a part of their childhood. Video games have created an environment where people can learn to be competitive and have fun with friends through a screen. Video games have created many core memories for players and this new update brings the Fortnite community together just in time for winter break.

“It’ll be nice over christmas break, like 2017 christmas Fortnite with some hot cocoa, Christmas music in the background,  a little tree and a blanket,” Anderson said.

With winter break approaching many students will have extra time to dedicate towards the game as they don’t have their usual responsibilities of school and sports. Nolan Koebele, senior at East, has always had a strong hobby for video games and is ready to spend his break playing Fortnite

“I am very excited for the OG Fortnite to return because it’s going to take me down memory lane,” Koebele said. “Also my friends and I will play it from dusk till dawn.”

Koebele is expecting many long nights over break playing his favorite game from when he was younger. Hoping for the best, Koebele along with many peers have high expectations for Fortnite’s newest upgrade.

Over time Fornite has changed many times and lots of players lost interest due to upgrades and changes with new seasons. Some players however stay as consistent as they can while balancing the life of a highschool student.

Michael Mora, another student at East, has dedicated a lot of his time to gaming.

“Back then, I probably spent four hours and maybe more. But now like an hour and a half, not even,” Mora said.

As Fortnite became extremely popular, many teenagers contributed time and effort to the game. Mora is one of many who dedicates time towards getting better at the game as he finds joy in playing.

“Just because you didn’t want to put in the work and the hours to get better doesn’t allow you to hate on the game,” Mora said. “Back then I was only thinking about Fortnite.”

Even though some of the seasons became unpopular, Mora stayed with the game and improved, finding success in victory royales. Not all players can say the same as they eventually got tired of the new game modes and decided to take a break, take Thomas Anderson as an example.

“I played for about two years straight, and then it just got bad. So I decided to take a little break,” Anderson said. “After that we got back on it last year for the Fortnite OG, that was a good time.”

Overall, students at East, especially our senior class players, are excited to reminisce on their childhood with memories the OG season brings back.
