On Jan. 23, 2025, East hosted their Girl’s Basketball senior night against the Plainfield Central Wildcats, which resulted in East’s thirteenth win of the season with a final score of 71-41.
In one of their last regular season games, the team kept their winning record and earned themselves a ten-game winning streak. Varsity Basketball is hoping to keep the momentum as they get closer to their conference game where they aim to earn the conference championship title for the second year in a row.
With a different starting lineup than usual, all five seniors began the game together on the court. Four-year Varsity player senior Maggie Lewandowski got the game rolling by scoring the first point. Lewandowski commented on how it felt to play with all seniors on the court at once.
¨It was really cool to all get each other shots. I don’t remember a time we have all been on the floor at once.¨ Lewandowski said.
Lewandowski continued to score throughout the game leading the team with 20 points. Another senior, Cassie Van Meter–who made three out of four of her free throws and scored 6 points–wanted her senior night to have a memorable win.
¨I think we all wanted it to be a special night and be something fun. We were all excited to celebrate our seniors.¨ Van Meter said.
After not having the smoothest start, losing six out of eight games in the first month of the season, Varsity Girls Basketball held their heads up high and came back stronger for the continuation of the season with the help of their coaches.
Varsity Girls Basketball Coach Abraham Carretto has been head Varsity coach for 13 years and coached the team through many ups and downs. Carretto recalled how the beginning of the season led the team to where they are now.
¨We started off a little rough. But then, slowly but surely, we became more consistent,¨ Carretto said.¨The girls do a good job of getting together. It is just naturally happening because of them and that’s also how you build lifelong friendships.¨
With supportive coaching and a close team bond, Van Meter commented on how she will miss the East Basketball program as she graduates in May.
¨I will miss my friends and my coaches, especially the relationship I have with my coaches.¨ Van Meter said.
Girl’s basketball has had an eventful season and with conference approaching the seniors are hoping to stay on track to take the conference championship title.
