On Saturday, Feb. 22, an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast will be held at Oswego High School. That morning from 8-11 am, Key Club members will be volunteering to help with making the food, band students will perform in ensembles, and there will even be a pancake flipping contest. Tickets can be purchased at door 11 for $10 per person, however kids five and younger get in for free.
The goal of this event is to fund East’s Band Boosters, as well as Key Club’s parent company, Kiwanis.
Mr. Stevan Rexroat, one of the band directors at East, explains where the money is going in terms of helping out the band program.
“It all goes back into the budget for the band boosters,” Rexroat said. “We pay for clinicians, we pay for instruments, so it’s [the fundraiser] supporting the band program, and the operations of that.”
For Key Club, the money is going to community service projects. This event is one of the many ways Key Club is using to raise money for people in need.
Mrs. Michelle Niesluchowski, the sponsor for East’s Key Club, lists out the accomplishments, as well as future events for the club.
“We’ve given money to children in Zambia through UNICEF [United Nations Children’s Fund],” Niesluchowski said. “We’re doing a skating event to raise money and goods for the mutual ground domestic abuse. We’re also doing a bowling event to help the homeless.”
Key Club cares about Oswego’s community, and this fundraiser is just one example of that. Their members, along with music volunteers, get service hours from these events as well, meaning they help out the community while also boosting their own name.
