Senior Mia DiGiovanni has been named Athlete of the Week after consistently displaying E.A.S.T’s core values of excellence, academics, spirit, and tradition.

DiGiovanni has been swimming for seven years and has been on East’s swim team for the past four years. DiGiovanni began on JV her freshmen year and was then moved up to compete on varsity her sophomore year.

DiGiovanni credits parts of her success to the team environment that she has created with her upperclassmen teammates.

“Our team dynamic is really good, we are all very close and it creates a really positive environment where we can get better with each other,” DiGiovanni said.

Team captain senior Molly Gonzalez praises the work DiGiovanni does for her teammates.

“She is always cheering for people on the sides and is always supportive through the good and the bad of swimming, “ Gonzalez said. “Mia is a very uplifting part of the team.”

DiGiovanni has big goals for the upcoming season, looking to earn her third All-Conference award and potentially even a spot at state.

“My goals for this season are to make state and go best time in my 100 breaststroke,”  DiGiovanni said. “I am also looking forward to our conference meet, hoping that we can get our 18th conference win and keep the streak going.”

Head coach Robert Sprunger comments on how DiGiovanni will play a big part in leading the team to their next conference victory.

“Mia constantly prepares for our conference championship to continue the tradition of our first-place finish.” Sprunger said. “She has been valuing the process during practice by making changes to her stroke mechanics and being aware of what small differences can make.”

DiGiovanni is unsure about pursuing swimming in college, but as an honor roll student she has big plans to become an occupational therapist.
