This year, Oswego East’s Thanksgiving break was extended from its former Wednesday-Friday off to a full week off. This resulted in Easter break and Spring break being combined in the second semester. Students have different opinions on whether this change was a positive or a negative one.
Personally, we love this change in the break. While it does give us one less break, it still extends our Thanksgiving break. Also, it didn’t really shorten our spring break because we get that Monday off, and seniors have Wednesday and Thursday off due to ACT testing.
While there are only two breaks instead of three, the longer breaks allow for more travel, more rest, and overall will help students come back from break more focused and ready to learn.
Before, with only three days off for Thanksgiving, we felt like it was not much of a rest at all. It also didn’t give us enough time to go out of town and visit our families. We feel like we had to choose between families, because we didn’t have enough time to visit with everyone. The longer break allows us to travel and see family for Thanksgiving, but also maybe be home with immediate family for Christmas. Overall, the longer break may save some families some money because instead of having to travel a couple of times a year for shorter periods, they can go on one extended trip!
Some believe that having shorter breaks more often would be a better option. It allows for more frequent days off. While this is true, the shorter breaks allow for less travel without missing school, fewer people you can visit, and a shorter amount of time to reset.
We are excited about having a nice, long Thanksgiving break to enjoy with our friends and family.
