It’s almost 2026, and a new year leads to new beginnings. One of the most popular New Year’s traditions is making a New Year’s resolution. Although many people participate in this tradition, driveresearch.com found that just nine percent of Americans actually keep their resolutions throughout the year.

New Year’s resolutions are important because they offer a structured way to set goals for self-improvement. There are many ways to keep these resolutions throughout the year, rather than forgetting them.

Staying on top of your goals can be tough. Many people want to see a difference within a couple of days, but what they don’t understand is that most results show after over a month. If you gain the discipline and consistency early on in your resolution, it becomes easier to continue on.

How to stay consistent with your resolutions:

Measure your progress: Instead of being vague, be specific so you can easily measure your goal. For example, instead of just saving money, you specify the amount and in what amount of time, like $200 a month. This allows you to track your progress and see if you are achieving your goal.

Write in a journal: Crossing off each day and breaking down your goals leads to staying consistent. Create a chart starting at day one and set the timeline for how long you want to keep your resolution. As each day passes, cross off the day. In addition to this, write down what you want to accomplish each day. This will give you a solid plan and something to follow.

Forgive yourself: It is likely that there will be road blocks in achieving your goals. It is important to move forward, rather than dwell. One setback will not ruin your overall goal, so keep going!

Know your “why”: Keep your motivation for the goal in your head throughout the year. Understanding the reason for your resolution motivates you to continue on.

You got this! While staying committed can be challenging, building strong habits, tracking your progress, and understanding the purpose behind your goals can make a lasting difference. Anyone can turn a simple resolution into meaningful change throughout the year.
