Senior Angelo McLernon, a four-year varsity swimmer at East, has been named East’s athlete of the week by head coach Erik Enslen for his unwavering effort and commitment to the team.
McLernon has been swimming for seven years and has been a vital part of East’s team since his freshman year. Enslen calls attention to McLernon’s work ethic and his sportsmanship.
Enslen says that with McLernon being one of the team captains this year, he was a big leader for the younger athletes. He showed up every day with a positive attitude and has come a long way since freshman year.
Being named East’s athlete of the week means a lot to McLernon and is a clear representation of his dedication to swimming.
“It’s important to me to be named athlete of the week because it really reassures me that all of my hard work that I’ve done the past four years is being seen,” McLernon said
McLernon’s work ethic comes from a strong inspiration from his family. He says that his dad is his biggest inspiration and is always there for him, inside and outside of swim.
McLernon’s younger sister, Giana McLernon, a freshman on the girls’ swim team, is proud of her brother’s accomplishments and applauds him for his growth and focus.
“He’s worked really hard to get to where he is right now. He finished off his high school career really well, and he’s done a lot of good things this season,” Giana McLernon said.
McLernon has qualified for sectionals the past two years and was a part of the state team this year, which was his goal for the season, ending his swim career on a high note.
Aside from being a strong piece of East’s swim team, McLernon is also involved in clubs at East, like the National Honor Society, and is the Vice President of the Senior Class Council.
With state being this past weekend, McLernon’s swim career has come to an end on a high note, alongside his teammates and coaches’ support.
