Senior Max Coleman has been named this week’s athlete of the week for being an invaluable part of the team and embodying E.A.S.T.’s core values of excellence, academics, spirit, and tradition.
As a third-year varsity volleyball player, Coleman has been excelling on and off the court, causing head coach Dru Filkins to choose him as the Athlete of the Week.
“Even while injured, after he gets his treatment, he comes in and helps support the team as much as he can. He embodies all core values and is an important part of our program.” Filkins said.
Coleman has been playing volleyball since his Freshman year, spending the majority of his career on varsity. As a setter on the team, he is hopeful that they will grow as a whole and as individuals this season, with a goal of having a good record and making a good playoff run.
Coleman is hoping to achieve these goals through his and his team’s work ethic and holding themselves to a high standard.
“I have accountability for myself, like being there for my teammates because I don’t want to let them down,” Coleman said, “We work as a machine, we want to be a team, and everybody has to do their part.”
His teammates have also noticed Coleman’s commitment to volleyball and being a strong piece of the team. Specifically, his teammate Tom Donovan, who is another senior volleyball player.
“We’ve been playing together since we were freshmen, and it’s been awesome seeing him improve as a player, he even broke his own record recently, so clearly he’s continuing to develop as a player,” Donovan said, “He always finds ways to lift all of us up even if we’re down, he’s just a great teammate overall.”
Off the court, Coleman has been committed to his academics, another important value at East. He is also a member of the National Honor Society and the National Technical Honor Society. His coach applauds him for his achievements while continuing to be present on the team.
“In the classroom, Max is also excelling with five A’s while taking two AP classes,” Filkins said.
With the season still in swing, Coleman is continuing to work with his team to face any challenges and grow.
