On Oct. 2, the student council sent out an email stating that the homecoming pep rally was cancelled due to high heat advisories. The student council deemed the heat to be unsafe and decided to look into other options for rescheduling.
Student Council advisor Patrick Sweeney elaborated that they worked very hard to move the event to the morning, like Oswego High School did, but ran into some alterations with all the activities they had planned.
“We hired entertainment, we have class games, we have a DJ, so all of those components that we had when asked if they would be able to pivot and do the morning, they all said no,” Sweeney said.
The football team was disappointed to see the pep rally cancelled. They feel like the pep rally is a way to get students excited for the homecoming football game, but without it, they felt like they were missing out on a pregame experience.
Jasiah Watson, East’s starting running back, was disappointed that he didn’t get to experience his final pep rally.
“I was kind of messed up about it. It’s my senior year, and I’m always looking forward to the pep rally before every homecoming football game,” Watson said.
Many people have suggestions on when the pep rally should be rescheduled and what they would like to see at future pep rallies.
Frank English, East’s defensive lineman, has noticed that many upperclassmen leave before the afternoon pep rally.
“I think that the pep rally should be in the morning so that everyone has to come and nobody can go home and skip it. Also, it will be cold enough, so it doesn’t have to get cancelled due to heat ever again,” English said.
Students look forward to the pep rally, and cancelling this caused commotion in the student body. Students are excited about the anticipation of the possible rescheduling in the fall.
