East’s speech team is holding its first meeting of the year on Oct. 20; students are encouraged to come out and get involved in this team.
The speech team, which began last year, is a space where creativity is kindled and opportunities are given to students who are interested in any event involving public speaking.
Events include performing speeches, poetry, monologues, skits and more. There is truly something that will appeal to anyone interested. Their main goal this year is to expand the team and get more students involved.
Speech team sponsor and English teacher Alexandria Wachal not only wants the students involved in the team to be improving their own speeches, but to learn how to work well with others and have fun.
“At the meetings we get to know each other and get one on one practice with each of the coaches, so you’ll be able to hone in on your event,” Wachal said, “It’s a really fun vibe, there’s snacks and games. There’s a lot of time to get to know your teammates”
Last year the speech team went to regionals where students were able to receive feedback on their speeches and got to hear other students’ work which played a huge role in improving the program at East.
Another exciting part of the speech team this year is that they have added two new coaches. The additional coaches will provide fresh ideas and act as another leader for those on the team. One of the new coaches is one of East’s new English teachers, Sage Sorensen, who is excited to see what this year holds for the speech team.
“I’m really excited to be a part of the team. I love speech because there’s a big diversity of events, so I’m excited to see the new people that come in and all the different things they do and we do as a team” Sorensen said.
The speech team meets every Monday after school, with their first meeting being Oct. 20. Students are encouraged to come out to room F228 and get involved!
