International Animation Day is a holiday established by the Association Internationale du Film d’Animation (ASIFA ) on Oct. 28, dedicated to celebrating the importance of animation and its cultural significance, and how it has impacted multiple generations throughout their lives.

International Animation Day is important because it highlights the influence of animated pictures throughout the history of movies and TV shows.

In 2025, International Animation Day falls on a Tuesday, and over 50 countries are expected to take part in hosting screenings, workshops, and exhibitions.

Each year, the ASIFA creates a unique poster to represent the global celebration of International Animation Day. This year, the artist was Lucija Mrzljak, known for illustrating children’s books and drawing political caricatures.

Sophomore Isa Khan, a fan of animated movies, appreciates the different approaches an animator can take.

“I love animated movies. I’ve been watching them my whole life. My favorite is probably “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” because I think the art style is awesome,” Khan said.

Animation can take on many different forms. From child cartoons, like Bluey, to complex adult storylines, like Bojack Horseman, there is something for everyone to sink their teeth into.

Jake Tanig, a sophomore at East, is a fan of a specific type of animation called anime.

“My favorite form of animation is anime, I’m just a fan of the art style, and one of my favorite anime is Bleach,” Tarig said

Many artists also take this opportunity to share behind the scenes looks at their movies or shows, or to honor movies and animators who inspired their careers. Others explore the history of animation studios such as Disney and Pixar, which have turned animation into a global art form.
