As second semester begins, students are returning from a long winter break, having to adjust to the normal school schedule once again. Early mornings with packed schedules can be a shock to some after weeks of rest.
Checking in with students helps build a stronger community within the school. Just asking how their break went and how they’re doing can help students get back on track for the last stretch of the year.
Junior Marco Mendoza has been able to adjust better than some, with a very simple method.
“I’ve just been going to sleep gradually earlier to ease into the new sleep schedule. It’s still been annoying having to sit in a classroom and be alert,” Mendoza said.
While Mendoza has had an easier time getting used to waking up early again, many other students haven’t had as much luck with getting enough sleep and staying alert throughout the day.
Freshman Emily Lin who is experiencing her first high school winter break, is struggling with adjusting to school again.
“I feel like winter break felt really short, and I’m just ready for school to end,” Lin said.
Students need to be prepared for the rest of the year, and checking in with them allows students to express themselves and feel welcomed back. These check-ins give people the opportunity to understand how students are feeling after a long break.
